London’s iconic Oxford Street department store was founded by Harry Gordon Selfridge and first opened in March 1909.
Designed by American architect Daniel Burnham, Selfridges is a classical Grade II listed retail premises with 540,000 square feet (50,000 m²) of selling space over a total of nine floors which includes two basements and a roof top terrace.
Featuring an innovative steel frame design that enabled extensive glass frontage on Oxford Street and Duke Street, the large, fully glazed windows have seen a vast array of eye-catching window dressing and retail promotions over the years.
In more than 110 years of retail activity and operations the external façade of the Beaux-Arts style building has changed very little. The interior also remains true to its original design but has been subject to regular refurbishment and upgrades.
Henny Ltd are the preferred flooring contractor for Selfridges and are responsible for supplying and installing nominated flooring across the store. Flooring materials that include marble, granite, ceramics, wood, and vinyl are used throughout.
Any refurbishment, repair and renewal work are generally performed out-of-hours which presents a number of challenges to ensure the shopfloor is ready for use the next day. All work must be completed overnight in a timely fashion. Where appropriate fast setting materials and fast curing adhesives are used.
Cleanliness is paramount, and to ensure dust and foreign bodies do not escape from any work areas, protection tents and dust extraction systems are extensively employed.
All flooring work completed by Henny Ltd is performed to an exceptionally high standard in keeping with the expectation of high quality for a world-renowned retail establishment.
Henny Ltd are proud to be an integral part of the Selfridges operation that helps to deliver an exceptional customer experience.
